A CLIFFSIDE NIRVANA
Staying at Cape Weligama:
A Resplendent Ceylon resort
Overlooking the mighty Indian Ocean and nestled in the palm-fringed cliff, Cape Weligama is nothing short of a fairytale.
The Dilmah family is a family of tea makers who have been producing some of the finest tea in Sri Lanka since 1988. The company is focused on creating a sustainable business which develops, contributes and reinvests in the community while protecting the environment.
With the aim of showcasing the beauty of Sri Lanka and their tea plantations to visitors, their first hotel was born in the highlands called Ceylon Tea Trail. Having discovered a passion for hospitality, they created a brand called Resplendent Ceylon which now has three properties setting a new standard in terms of luxury resorts in the country.
All three properties including Ceylon Tea Trails, Cape Weligama and Wild Coast Tented Lodge are the only Relais & Chateaux resorts in Sri Lanka. As per their tea business, their resort strives to be ethical and sustainable businesses and 10% of profits go to our MJF Charitable Foundation and Dilmah Conservation.
Cape Weligama is on a league of its own in terms of luxury. A luxury that is given not only by the beauty and comfort of the accommodations but mostly by the warm and impeccable customer service. We were taken care of as if we were royals but also as family, making our three days at Cape Weligama truly unforgettable.
Overlooking the mighty Indian ocean, the hotel is located in a beautiful part of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. Thirty-nine private accommodations are nestled in between the lush, palm-fringed cliff, offering unforgettable views and a sense of being while immersed in nature. A beautiful half-moon pool overlooks the ocean below, making it a prime spot to watch gold tinted sunsets. As soon as we arrived in our Ocean Premier Villa, we felt at home. Spacious, decorated with character, filled with all the comforts and some extra thoughtful touches to make our stay beyond perfect. The shower becomes a steam room for relaxing evenings; a Sonos sound system fills all the rooms with your favourite music; a private pool awaits outside for a dip to escape the heat of the day. Our favourite part was the possibility to have breakfast delivered to the room. Because who doesn’t love to eat pancakes in bed?
The resort has access to two beaches where it is possible to swim, surf or even dive. The Sports Center offers first-rate PADI dive courses and other activities including private cruises, whale and dolphin-watching trips, and banana boating. We enjoyed walking down the east beach which is almost deserted as there are no other resorts in the surroundings.
Watching the sunset over the ocean, tinting the beach and the water gold and orange, one of our favourite moments at this glorious resort.
Dining at Cape Weligama was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our stay. To fine dine in front of the ocean, under the stars, while listening to the sound of the waves crashing on the cliffs is a real treat. The menu offers a mix of traditional Sri Lankan dishes prepared with locally sourced and sustainable ingredients, alongside a couple of Asian and international dishes. We had the pleasure to meet Chef Vinnol, who helped us choose our plates and explained to us how to eat curry in the proper Sri Lankan way, which obviously tasted so much better!
