Read our recommendations on great things to do while in Trincomalee, on the beautiful east coast of Sri Lanka.
Trinco, as the local call it, offers some of the best beaches in Sri Lanka but the little town offers much more than that. During our couple of days in Trincomalee we had a great time exploring the historical part of the town, visiting the Fort and the main temple and immersing ourselves in the local life.
Below you can find our personal life of 5 great things to do in Trincomalee.
1. Meet the deers at Fort Frederick
Fort Frederick was built by the Portuguese on the debris of a famous Hindu temple called Koneswaram temple and completed in 1624. The Fort is nowadays used by the military as a base and is home to many wild deers who happily live in the many gardens.
2. Marvel at the colours of Sri Pathrakali Amman Kovil
A kovil is the Tamil word that refers to a Hindu temple built in the specific Dravidian architecture. This colourful temple is built right in the centre of town, a pop of colour in between the houses.
3. Immerse yourself in the local market
We are big fans of markets and we try to visit them in every city we find ourselves, from London to Trincomalee. Markets always give you a real feel for local life. The chaos, the smells, the atmosphere are always raw and unsugared and you get to see and meet all types of interesting people.
4. Relax at Nilaveli Beach
Nilaveli beach is the nicest beach in the area. Think of a wide strip of golden sand, flanked on one side from palm trees and the other side by blue, clear water. The Indian ocean is warm and placid, making it the perfect place to swim for hours.
5. Enjoy the view from Koneswaram Temple
Koneswaram Temple is located at the top of a hill, which you can reach walking along the road that cuts through Fort Frederik. After having visited the beautiful Hindu temple, were several sacred statutes are on show, make sure to walk to the side of temple to look at the bay and the ocean.
