On the south coast of Sri Lanka there is a surfers' paradise called Arugam Bay, where the ocean is mighty and warm, the sunsets spectacular and the atmosphere is as relaxed as it comes. We spent five glorious days in Arugam Bay, surfing, chilling on the golden sands and eating some of the best meals during our trip.

Despite the strange name (‘children’ in Italian!), but this cute little open air restaurant is the place to be. In a simple but welcoming space, Bambino’s offer a very ample choice of tasty Sri Lankan dishes, from kothu roti to rice and curry. Drinks are much cheaper than the competition and they make delicious cocktails.
Slightly off the main road this homely pizza restaurants has the best reviews on Trip Advisor and for a good reason. The pizza is cooked in a proper wood fire oven, coming out crispy and tasty. The menu offers a wide selection of toppings and even vegan cheese!
Upali $$
If you are looking for the spot with the best location, Upali has no rivals. This ec-friendly glaming and surf camp is sit on the beach, just in front of the bay's best surf spot. On the menu you will find friendly, international style snacks and dishes and delicious smoothies.
Gecko $$
We ate at Gecko twice during our stay in Arugam Bay, as we enjoyed the comfortable space with views on the ocean and the delicious food. The wood-fire pizza was very tasty and perfectly cooked and the rest of the menu offers a wide selection of international dishes and snacks, including vegetarian and vegan options.
Hideaway $$$
Hideaway is a charming family run resort, established more than 30 years ago and still run by the Tissera family. The restaurant situated in the main lounge area offers contemporary cuisine to guests and visitors. We stopped by for lunch and enjoyed a freshly made mix of vegetables, falafels and hummus and two mouth watering milkshakes.
